Ice Cream Artisan
Casual role
Based in Kaiapoi, North Canterbury
Ice Cream Charlie has been delighting generations of Charlie-loving New Zealanders since 1903. We're now seeking a reliable, detail-focused team member to support the production of our iconic, old-fashioned Vanilla Ices ice cream, made using the same traditional recipe that has defined Ice Cream Charlie for more than 122 years.
This is a casual, as-required, behind-the-scenes role, providing production cover to support our Master Ice Cream Maker and assist with continuity during periods of leave or increased demand.
Hours and engagement:
-
This is a casual position with no guaranteed hours, but may be up to four 8-hour shifts a week on a busy week
-
Shifts will be offered as and when required, based on production needs
-
Work may occur during the day or evening
-
From time to time, this may include multiple shifts in a week; at other times (such as during cooler weather), fewer or no shifts may be offered
About the role:
The successful applicant will play a key role in producing New Zealand's oldest ice cream recipe through a structured, three-day process.
The successful applicant will be required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement to protect our proprietary recipe and processes.
In addition, the role involves:
-
Maintaining a sterile, hygienic, and food-safe workspace
-
Completing temperature and quality checks for auditing and compliance purposes
-
Basic stock monitoring to ensure ingredients and supplies don't run low.
What we're looking for:
This role suits someone who is methodical, dependable, and comfortable working independently.
You'll bring:
-
Excellent reliability - production depends on you turning up when rostered
-
Confidence working solo
-
Ability to follow set processes precisely
-
Strong attention to detail with the ability to work carefully without rushing
-
Flexibility around shift timing (day or evening)
-
Previous food production experience is useful but not essential as full training will be provided.
Why join Ice Cream Charlie?
-
Be part of a genuine local legacy with 122 years of history
-
Work with supportive owners and a small, friendly team
-
Receive training in food safety, compliance, and traditional ice cream manufacturing
-
Uniform and PPE provided
